Marcelo Perez is part of a co-operative known as “The Coffee Flower Development Association”. This group is made up of 30 members, all of which are small family subsistence farmers. In the past, these coffee growers have sold their crops at less than the cost of production to external co-ops for at market rates. This is not sustainable and as a result many of these families have quit coffee growing with the ultimate goal of migrating to the US. Our green buyers have formed a relationship with this co-op and now offer prices for coffee at twice the market rate. This has prompted many of the members to stay on their farms with pricing that is sustainable and equitable.

Marcelo has a small farm that he has converted from mixed crop farming to 100% coffee production. Coffee is picked and transported to the co-op’s wet mill. Here the coffee is de-pulped and fermented without water in cement tanks and then set out onto raised patios to dry for up to a week. Buying this coffee is directly helping small farming families stay on their farms in their own Country.
